When 250 units are packed into a standard 40-foot ISO container, cumulative acoustic emissions easily surpass 95 dBA at 1 meter, generating severe low-and-mid frequency noise pollution.
Identifying the Blade Pass Frequency (BPF)
The dominant acoustic signature of mining hardware is not broad-band pink noise; it is concentrated tonal whine caused by the Blade Pass Frequency (BPF):
BPF = (Fan RPM × Number of Blades) / 60
For a standard 7-blade fan spinning at 5,400 RPM, the primary acoustic spike occurs at 630 Hz, with second and third harmonics at 1,260 Hz and 1,890 Hz. Silencing solutions must be tuned specifically to attenuate these target frequencies rather than generic sound absorption.
Constructing Tuned Splitter Attenuators
In our Gimpo laboratory acoustic practicum, we teach the design and fabrication of two-stage splitter silencer baffles:
- Core Material: 80 kg/m³ density mineral rockwool wrapped in micro-perforated acoustic scrim to prevent mineral fiber shedding into the airflow stream.
- Baffle Thickness: 100mm splitters spaced with 150mm open air gaps to maintain open area ratio above 60%.
- Aerodynamic Nose Cones: Rounded intake fairings on each baffle splitter reduce static pressure loss by over 45% compared to square-edged boards.
Field installations following this geometry consistently record reductions from 88 dBA at 5 meters down to 51-53 dBA at the 15-meter property perimeter line, satisfying strict municipal environmental noise criteria.
