Taebaek 1.4MW Warehouse: 8.4°C Chip Temperature Reduction Without Active Refrigeration

Facility Context: A 1,400 kW air-cooled facility situated in Gangwon-do housing 420 Antminer S19 Pro units inside a retrofitted agricultural distribution warehouse. During July and August 2024, ambient temperatures reaching 31°C triggered recurring thermal throttle loops on the upper two tiers of server racks.

Diagnostic Findings: Following procedures from our Ventilation Masterclass, site lead Min-woo Kang used differential pressure gauges to discover that the hot exhaust plenum was running at +0.08 in. w.g. positive pressure relative to the room, causing 22% of heated exhaust to recirculate back over the top of the dividing wall into the cold intake aisle.

Key Engineering Modifications:

  • Installed four 54-inch variable-speed fiberglass exhaust wall fans to establish a -0.05 in. w.g. negative plenum depression.
  • Replaced flat vertical sheet metal dividers with 45-degree angled directional airflow diverters.
  • Expanded intake louver gross area from 18 m² to 26 m², reducing intake face velocity from 620 FPM to 370 FPM.
Measured Outcome:
Average chip operating temperature dropped from 79.6°C to 71.2°C at peak ambient load. Zero hashboard shutdowns recorded throughout August.

Incheon Port Zone: 21 dBA Acoustic Attenuation for Perimeter Boundary Compliance

Facility Context: Apex Hash Infrastructure deployed two 40-foot modular ISO mining containers in an industrial logistics zone in Incheon. High-RPM miner fan emissions generated an unacceptably loud tonal whine measuring 72 dBA at the 15-meter property line, resulting in a formal municipal warning.

Acoustic Strategy: Attending our Acoustic Silencing Workshop, the team learned how to target the 630 Hz Blade Pass Frequency and 1,260 Hz harmonic spikes rather than relying on generic acoustic foam that burns or degrades.

Acoustic Baffle Construction Details:

  • Fabricated 12 modular splitter silencer boxes using 80 kg/m³ high-density basalt rockwool lined with non-woven fiberglass scrim.
  • Engineered 150mm airflow channels with rounded nose fairings to prevent exhaust backpressure buildup on miner fans.
  • Constructed an exterior staggered acoustic boundary barrier using perforated steel panels.
Measured Outcome:
Sound pressure level at the 15m property line reduced from 72 dBA down to 51 dBA, satisfying all local environmental zoning regulations.

We faced an official noise abatement notice from the local district office due to high-frequency fan whine reaching 72 dBA at our perimeter boundary line. The acoustic training provided exact rockwool density specs and cut blueprints for dual-stage exhaust baffles. Building the silencer boxes took our crew nearly twice as long as the workshop syllabus suggested because raw galvanized sheet metal fabrication requires specialized metalworking tools we had to source locally.
